Despite the tendency towards initial self-management, most participants sought medical treatment within 3 months of wound recognition, primarily from primary care physicians or ER/urgent care services.

Challenges in Treatment

Financial barriers emerged as a significant obstacle, affecting both access to and continuation of recommended treatments.

Social Isolation vs. Connection

While chronic wounds increased feelings of isolation for many, interactions with wound care providers offered a sense of increased social connection for a portion of respondents.

Implications

Limitations

The study acknowledges its limitations, including the non-representative sample due to insufficient data on the composition of the full population of patients receiving wound care. It also outlines directions for future research to enhance understanding and improve care outcomes by increasing the robustness of sampling and conducting in-depth interviews.
