Chronic wounds represent a significant challenge to U.S. healthcare systems and patients. They impact quality of life, economic stability, and psychological well-being.
Despite their prevalence, comprehensive insights into patient experiences remain limited. This study revealed the experiences of individuals with chronic wounds.
In our approach, CommonAlly designed the study to:
Explore the multifaceted impact of chronic wounds on patients' lives, including emotional, social, and economic challenges. Develop further insight into treatment options and interactions with healthcare providers.
Reported regular negative thoughts associated with their condition.
Experienced a negative impact on relationships.
Reported a significant or severe negative impact on self-confidence.
Conversation tactics with ChatBot encouraged engagement and included a video response feature.
780 Americans from diverse backgrounds
- Nature and impact of chronic wounds on daily life.
- Pathways to receiving care.
- Treatment experiences and outcomes.
A significant majority of participants reported a marked decrease in quality of life due to the physical, emotional, and social ramifications of their chronic wounds.
Nearly a quarter of respondents experienced a decrease in household income contribution, with 17% reporting changes in employment status attributed to their wound condition.
Despite the tendency towards initial self-management, most participants sought medical treatment within 3 months of wound recognition, primarily from primary care physicians or ER/urgent care services.
Financial barriers emerged as a significant obstacle, affecting both access to and continuation of recommended treatments.
While chronic wounds increased feelings of isolation for many, interactions with wound care providers offered a sense of increased social connection for a portion of respondents.
The study acknowledges its limitations, including the non-representative sample due to insufficient data on the composition of the full population of patients receiving wound care. It also outlines directions for future research to enhance understanding and improve care outcomes by increasing the robustness of sampling and conducting in-depth interviews.
This case study sheds light on the profound impact of chronic wounds on individuals' lives, emphasizing the importance of holistic and accessible healthcare solutions. By leveraging innovative data collection methods like chatbot polling and carry-on engagement campaigns, we can better understand and address the multifaceted needs of patients with chronic wounds.
We delivered a robust analysis and presentation with a video story bank of recorded testimonials and a follow-up QR-code survey for additional engagement.
This enabled the organization to humanize its data further and inform future policies on treating chronic wounds.
